Dr. Alicia Perez is a Licensed Mental Health Counselor (licensed to perform psychotherapy) from Florida, a Board Certified Clinical Sexologist and a Certified Hypnotherapist.  She is a member of the Advisory Committee of the American Academy of Clinical Sexologists.  She received her Master of Science in Psychology from Carlos Albizu University.  She received a Clinical Sexologist Certification from the American Academy of Clinical Sexologist Postgraduate training and holds a Doctorate Degree in Clinical Sexology.  Dr. Perez' doctoral coursework included developing the Holographic Therapy model which is a viable treatment approach in treating trauma related sexual abuse.  She has been working in the mental health field with domestic violence, anger management, parenting, the Dade County school systems, divorce groups, families, adults, couples, children, adolescents and EAP. 

Dr. Perez is a  Diplomate of the American Board of Sexology; a member of the American Mental Health Counselors Association and the Florida Mental Health Counselors, a member of the American Association of Sexuality Educators, Counselors and Therapists and a member of International Association of Counselors and Therapists, member of EMDRIA and member of Association for Comprehensive Energy Psychology.

Instincts and Stress:

You know that certain behaviors contribute to an animal's survival.  Animals can perfom complex tasks that are not based on prior experiences such as reproduction, feeding, building nests and courtship.  Just like our animal friends, we react instinctly when our life is threatened. 

We are hardwired to react instinclively when our survival is threatened. Our autonomic nervous system with the sympathetic and parasympathetic systems are responsible for our reactions when our survival is threatened.  The sympathetic system is the speed peddle that alerts the body to get ready to fight and the parasympathetic puts the breaks because its function is to calm the response.  The reaction to life threatening events has been termed the fight-or-flight response because our body gets ready to fight or escape.  The fight-or-flight response was first illustrated by Dr. Walter Cannon a physiologist who worked at the Harvard Medical School (1963). 

In the fast paced world, we live in a constant battle with stressful events.  For example,  driving, getting work done on time, family problems, financial burdens, etc.  These events produce stress and instinctively our bodies are placed on the fight-or-flight mode constantly.  It is believed that we are built with a certain threshold to withstand stress.  So, with all the stressful events our threshold is depleted and our body then develops diseases.  There are many diseases like diabetes, hypertension, arthritis, migraine, cancer (and others) that are stress related.
