Premarital Couples Therapy
It is reported that about 50% or marriages end in divorce. Premarital counseling enables the couple to talk about their expectations in the marriage. The couple gets a chance to explore each other’s understanding of marriage. They also get to discuss important things as values, career expectations, financial plan, child rearing practices, substance abuse, and intimacy.
Extramarital Affair (Unfaithfulness), Domestic Violence, Drug or Substance Abuse Problem
When a person finds out that their relationship partner has been unfaithful, it creates "entropy" in the love nest. Now, there is the problem of lost of trust. Trust is a given, but when it is lost, it is hard to re-establish. In therapy we will work in finding ways to build the trust lost.
Another thorn in the relationship is domestic violence. Domestic violence is a reality in many homes. It starts with the cycle of violence (trifold):
Tension - criticism, screaming, bad words, threats.
Physical violence and/or sexual
Honeymoon period - asking for forgiveness, making promises to change, giving you flowers/gifts.
It is important to seek help when this pattern of violence is present in the relationship.
Drug or Substance Abuse
When the problem in the relationship is related to addiction to drug or alcohol, it is extremely difficult to work in therapy unless the addict is ready to stop using.
